As a subjective gaming experience, there's plenty to pick apart. The boss battles are solidly designed but focused too much on endurance. The controls are great once you get used to them, but they're somewhat unique in feel and thus divisive. Not everyone is going to absorb the experience the same way, and I can see exactly why plenty of people (see this thread) aren't huge fans. The game is generally praised and people that love it are really vocal because the Wii U release was given the short end of the stick and sold poorly. The Switch version is at 86 on Metacritic which is a good score regardless of how tight-assed some gamers are about review scores. "Overrated" is the last thing I'd call Tropical Freeze. From that vantage point, anything that can constructively point out where TF succeeds and NSMBU maybe doesn't is welcome IMO. Meanwhile NSMB and its sterile/recycled aspects are just accepted as a fact of life, exempt from the "too many platformers" talking point that only ever pops up when people want to criticize DK (and not Kirby, Yoshi, Rayman, the hodge-podge of indies). TF got so much unwarranted vitriol in 2013 just for existing, and the reason-free comments of "it's a great game, Nintendo shouldn't make a sequel" show that some haven't learned and probably would react similarly poorly if a new DKC were revealed.
A new game that lives up to the high standard of TF would make people start associating all of its positive qualities with the DK brand itself, and add to the ranks of DK series fans compared to what currently seems to be Tropical Freeze specific fans.Īlso I don't see why any comparison between NSMBU and TF should be written off as "shitting on" the former. I hope we get a sequel from Retro or someone else so people start looking forward to new DK games instead of reflexively shitting on them for not being literally anything else. So, there is some bitterness associated with that for some people. Weird how NSMU DX is so terrible, but yet, people bought one of the most overpriced piece of hardware of all time in order to have basically just this game to play for almost a year. GameXplain's vendetta against this game certain adds fuel to the fire. But, this thread and the other "King of 2D Side Scrollers" thread are veiled "don't buy this new Mario game because we don't like it" threads. The vast majority of buyers for this game have no interest in the average side-scroller outside of a Sonic here or there, and the sales numbers of side-scrollers over the last 10 years shows that.Īll the games listed here are great. People like Mario games because they are like a genre to itself, it's not fast and action packed like almost every other side-scroller mentioned here. Spoiler alert: Warframe did not see some huge growth in sales! And neither will DKTF. Same thing happens with Destiny 2, when everyone was talking about Warframe. OP, it an immature reaction that happens here when a game like this releases that the hardcore feel is beneath them.
